Daylight Savings Outlook Not Sunny For Microsoft

Mobile phones and Blackberrys using Windows software will not be ready for daylight savings when it goes into effect. The 2005 Energy Policy Act passed by the United States Senate calls for a change in the start and end dates of Daylight Savings. This year, not only will we lose an hour of sleep two weeks earlier than normal, but it appears as though certain functions of Windows based software running on Mobile devices may be affected as well. Susan Bradley covers this in a recent blog, copied below.

In March in the USA our daylight savings will change… and I’m not ready and I’ll tell you why I know that ...

First I installed the Windows OS patch on the servers - all was well. - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928388

Then I installed the Exchange patch on the server - all was well. - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926666

Then I installed the Sharepoint patch on the server - all was well. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;924881
Expected this for Outlook.. no worries… Users will then either manually change the Calendar time zone (available from the ‘Calendar Options…’ dialog on Tools | Options) or respond to the automatic prompts to change their Calendar time zone that will occur 1 to 7 days after the DST rules are updated on the machine.

Began test. Set an appointment at 4/1/2007 at 1 a.m. Invited everyone in the office, told them to “accept” the invitation. Told the Secretaries to go look at everyone’s calendars (they have full rights to do so) to see if everyone’s calendar had a 1 a.m. appointment on 4/1/2007. All was well.

Then had the folks with Windows Mobile 3 phones to check what time/date that 1 a.m. meeting was.

Houston ...we have a problem. Their appointment was for Midnight on 4/1/2007. Uh oh....the phones need a patch. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923953

Blackberry folks look like they are going to have to manually make the change, http://www.blackberryforums.com/bes-admin-corner/60258-impact-north-american-daylight-saving-time-changes-2007-blackberry-device-us.html in which case you might want to wait to apply those time patches as obviously they do have impact.

Kevin reported that http://pdaphonehome.com/ already had an OS based patch for his Samsung device http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-i730-i830-i830w/81246-2007-time-zone-update-information-wm-devices.html?highlight=timezone

Given that my main phones are brands no longer even sold… I’ll have to do some digging and see what my options are. Start, run, regedit on my phone just isn’t quite what I had in mind....

Safoian to Receive Prestigious Business Award

Tony Safoian, president and CEO of SADA Systems, will be recognized for significant business achievement in the San Fernando Valley. The Top 40 Under 40 Award Reception is an annual event sponsored by The San Fernando Business Journal. Recipients of the award come from a number of different business disciplines. Whatever their endeavor, all of the recipients have two things in common. They have all made significant achievements in business within their respective fields, and all of them are under 40 years old as of January 17th.

Under Tony Safoian as president and CEO, SADA Systems Inc. has grown to become a premier provider of IT solutions in the San Fernando Valley. Though hardly limited in scope, Safoian and SADA Systems have made a name for themselves by focusing on small to medium businesses. Regardless of the size of an organization SADA is a leader in the world of technology solutions. Services offered by SADA Systems include the standard services of telephone helpdesk and on-site support. More exotic offerings from SADA include the virtual desktop service, ZEROi; the managed network resource plan, CITO 3.0; and outsourced content development. “SADA has been successful by providing services beyond consultant work,” says Safoian about the success of SADA Systems, “we not only recommend viable solutions to business challenges, we implement those solutions as well.”

The Top 40 Under 40 is an annual award given by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal to professionals in the Valley area. To qualify to receive the award the individual must have made some significant business achievement in the valley area, and be under the age of 40 as of January 17th. This year’s awards reception is presented by Woodbury University in partnership with The San Fernando Valley Business Journal, and the San Fernando Valley Jaycees. Recipients are nominated by readers of the San Fernando Business Journal and area business professionals. Wednesday’s event will be the fourth annual presentation of the 40 Under 40 awards.
